Kids’ Toys – Are Your Kids Safe With Them?
There are many toys that can pose a threat to your kids. While the recommended age is suggestive, you should follow certain steps to ensure that you kid is safe with the toy he/she is playing.
Baby’s toys may be fun for the baby but a concern for you. Not all of them are safe enough to be left alone with the baby. In the past year, numerous toy injuries were treated in Australian hospitals and many of them were kids aged less than 5 years. Surely this calls for a lot of safety rules. Here, those safety rules are laid out to prevent your kid from getting hurt.
While selecting toys, you should always check out the “recommended age” section. That’s your starting point. You know your child the best and have clear understanding of your child’s maturity and development level. Verify whether the recommended age and your kid’s maturity match or not. Any toy having projectiles should never be given to kids who are less than 4 years of age. In some cases ever 6 year age kids are not yet ready to handle such things. Similarly, if your kid is 3 years old and still puts things into his mouth, stay away from any toy that has small parts.
Big toys are always advisable for 3 year olds and less as smaller parts can make them choke. Any toy that can slip inside a toilet paper roll is not safe for the little ones. Another point is the weight of the toy. If it is capable of hurting your kid in case it falls on him, do not give it to him. Any toy must be compact. Make sure that the soft toys are sewn properly, seams are reinforced, and the paint is intact. A toy should always be free of small rounded objects like buttons. Yarns and ribbons should also be kept away.
Another common mistake parents make is to give toys that can be used only when a child reaches a certain age. For example a bike; parents often buy a bigger size so as not to buy another next year. If the kid is physically not in shape to handle the bike, he/she can meet with an accident. Be careful while gifting any toy that is old and has been passed for generations. They can at times be easily broken into pieces and feasted upon. Toys having any chord or string longer than 12 inches are a strict “NO” for kids as they can be wrapped around the neck. Kids often do this. This can really be fatal for the kid.
